What is Red-Eye?

According to Google’s definition, red-eye is an undesirable effect in flash photography of people appearing to have red eyes, caused a reflection from the retina when the flashgun is too near the camera lens. In simpler terms, what exactly cause this effect?

It’s what happens when a camera captures light reflecting from the back of the subject’s eye when you use the flash to get a picture in the dark. Think your eyes like an old-flashed camera. Light travels through the clear covering surface like it does with the lens of a camera. Your pupils are the filters in your eyes as they collect that light and control the amount that gets through. Your retina, the shutter button if you will, captures that light and sends it to your brain like it’s the film. If you use a flash camera to take somebody’s picture, their eyes don’t have time to tighten up and shrink down the amount of light entering their eyes. Image two people with flash cameras in their hands trying to take a picture of each other at the same time. That light is going to hit and bounce off of each other. Why do eyes look red in pictures? That is because of the blood supply in layers of blood vessels located in the back of the eye called the choroid that makes it look so red.

Tricks with the Camera

But what if you want to prevent red-eye before it happens?

There are some little tricks that you can learn with your camera that will stop the red-eye effect right in its tracks. First, do not have your subjects stare straight into the camera. Instead, have them slightly look away from the lenses. That way, their eyes won’t capture the flash from a direct angle. Another trick is to take the pictures in a bright room. The main cause of having to rely on the flash function of a camera is a low light. The darkness will cause pupils to dilate. Turn on the lights or use high nature lighting for your pictures. To stop the red-eye effect with your camera, turn on the anti-red-eye function. Cameras have come a long way in this day and age. Modern models have an anti-red-eye function on them. Flip it on and snap away.

Another thing you can do is move the flash and the lens further apart. As previously stated, red-eye is caused when light is too close to a person’s eye. Granted, this little tip will be useless to you if you have an internal-flash camera. This is for the external-flash camera users. Move the flash away from your human subject and snap away. This will prevent light from reflecting off the pupils and entering the lens. One more useful tip to memorize is to make sure that the people you are taking pictures of are not drunk. This may come as a surprise, but it is actually quite helpful. Believe it or not, alcohol can ruin your chances of the perfect picture. As it is well-known, liquor can slow down a person’s reaction time. When your human subject is drunk, their pupils don’t close fast enough and they end up letting in too much light.

Try to get pictures of your friends while they are sober. If you are taking a scheduled shoot, tell everyone not to have a drink before you begin.

Good Luck!
