In the recent years, indie game developers have been beating out big game companies in terms of media popularity and gameplay. With this recent spike in indie gaming, it’s hard to know exactly what games are awesome and which ones need a little more attention. And since many games are still in development, half of the excitement might even be that they need a little work. Opening your game and finding out there’s been a major update is exciting.
For many people, finally watching game developers work with the public to see what needs improvement is a breath of fresh air. Often in traditional gaming what is done is done, and there was no going back and changing the bigger problems until the next installment.
If you love indie gaming, then you’ll love these indie games which have been some of the top-rated and most beloved additions in recent years.
While developer Finji’s Overland is still in first access, it’s set for a full release in 2017. So, note that while you can purchase the game now, there may be a few bugs or wrinkles to it.
Overland is turning survival-based games on their heads. In recent years, we’ve had games like Sheltered which was enjoyable on its own, but Overland is very different with more content to explore. Overland couples a beautiful art style with new and exciting gameplay and plot. Your adventure beings in a post-apocalyptic North America. You need to assemble a group of survivors and manage your supplies, including fuel and weapons. Meanwhile, dangerous creatures and strangers lurk the wasteland in these randomly-generated levels. You’ll have to make tough choices that could lead to your demise or your success. You might want to rescue an unhelpful survivor or spend your time stockpiling supplies. Every action you make has a reaction.
This game is available on Steam for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The full-release date hasn’t been announced yet, although it is set for some time in 2017. Overland’s first access gameplay is out right now and will not disappoint you.
If you’ve been following indie games for a while, then you’ve probably heard of this gem. It’s been out since Late February of 2016, but the game developer, ConcernedApe, is still hard at work adding to this game and fixing up the bugs.
Many of us remember playing Harvest Moon as kids. ConcernedApe created Stardew Valley as a way to address some of the problems that the Harvest Moon games had and after several years of work, this one-man show created a fresh new farming simulator that has had people hooked for over a year.
In this game, you customize your own character and move onto your grandfather’s old farm which features a small house and an overgrown plot of land. You don’t have a lot of money, but it’s up to you to build a new farm from the very bottom. But you don’t even have to be a farmer. You can be a famous fisherman or you can spend your time exploring the mysterious and dangerous mines. You can even be a rancher if you like. Coupled with this, there is a huge village for you to explore and a bunch of characters to meet, befriend, and even marry.
Stardew Valley is fully released, but new features are constantly being added by ConcernedApe. By the end of 2017, a multiplayer mode will be released so you can farm with friends. You can purchase it on Steam. It’s available on a bunch of platforms such as the standard Windows, macOS, and Linux as well as Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch.
The buzz about this game is high and honestly, it’s worth the chatter. If you watch YouTube, then you’ve heard of Subnautica and the utter gaming pandemonium that this game unleashed. There are few bugs as this is a pre-release game, but this sci-fi survival game is set to release very soon in September 2017 by the developers, Unknown Worlds Entertainment.
In this game, you crash land in an alien world on a small life pod. Out in the distance, your main ship is completely ruined. You don’t really know what happened, but you’re alone and there’s one more thing: a majority of this planet is water and that really loud noise you hear is a giant alien fish that’s trying to eat you. Have fun.
Avoid dangerous and gigantic alien sea creatures while traversing the depths and building underwater bases, guns, and giant submarines. But watch out, you’re never on the top of the food chain. There’s no end to the dangerous creatures you’ll encounter stranded on this alien planet. The story line is also incredible. You’ll try to piece together a story from abandoned bases and PDAs, but will any of it help you survive?
Subnautica is available on Steam. Its platforms include Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Xbox One. Remember that this is a pre-release game, so it’s constantly being updated with cool and exciting new features and creatures!
Night in the Woods
Night in the Woods was released just this February 2017 by the developers Infinite Fall. Many people have compared the game to Oxenfree in terms of art style, game play, and the “choose your own adventure” aspect. But don’t get any ideas. Night in the Woods is a completely different game. You play as a college dropout named Mae who’s a…cat? Yeah, everyone’s an animal in this game and it’s great.
In this game, you get to decide your fate and choose the storylines you become a part of and the friends your character, Mae, gets to hang out with. The town that you return to at the start of the game is crumbling around you, but Mae is sensing that something darker than just the closing of the coal mines is at play. Run, jump, and explore the woods with friends and foes as you delve deeper into this mystery.
One of the really cool parts about this game is that you can replay it and you’ll get to see different story lines and different events than you did the first time. Its complexity is just one of the reasons why it has achieved such high ratings. It also deals sensitively with many real-life issues while remaining true to its art style and vision.
Surprise, Surprise, this game was also released on Steam. It’s available on Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, and PlayStation 4.
These are some of the top-rated indie games available that you should consider playing right now. These games offer fresh takes on style, story, and gameplay that gamers have been craving for quite some time. So, if you’re finding yourself with some extra time to relax, try downloading one of these fantastic games. They won’t disappoint you!
